Guide to Working with Brushes

A Step-by-Step Guide to Working with Brushes in Photoshop

One of the benefits of working in Photoshop is the vast library of brushes to choose from. Join Corey Barker, your experienced Photoshop tour guide, as he takes you through the brush preset panel, showing you where and how to enable the pressure-sensitive pen features on your Wacom tablet.

Learn about the various brush types at your disposal and the principles behind setting up your brush presets, by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Select a brush tool – Photoshop has a large menu of brushes to choose from.

Step 2: Load your selected brush – Choose from a list defined by category.

Step 3: Append it to your existing list – Presets are modifiable, taking the default settings and making them more interesting.

Step 4: Modify brush properties – Using the “brush options” feature you can choose from a list of brush setting categories.

Step 5: Adjust the size jitter – Apply custom features to pen pressure and pen tilt.

If you find that you use pressure sensitivity a lot in Photoshop, adjusting your presets is a great place to start. Begin by loading the brushes you want to use, and then modifying them, adding the pen-centric features that give you more control over your settings. When you activate these presets they override any settings in the brush options panel.

The result is an intuitive brush tool that responds to pen pressure, pen tilt and rotation over the tablet, improving the way the brush works inside Photoshop.
